Google fiber is live - first speedtest

No comments:

There has been a lot of anticipation and buzz about gigabit home internet service "Google fiber" in the tech world. Today this experimental technology went live for the first time in Kansas city and here's the unrealistic proof. The image attached to this post shows speedtest result (yes, you are not dreaming).

Just imagine what you could do with an internet connection that fast. Blazing fast browsing and downloads, multi user online games with zero lag, unlimited painless torrent transfers, real-time HD streaming, there are endless possibilities all at the cost of $70 a month. I've already packed my stuff. Now all I need is an air ticket to Kansas. Haha, just kidding! But seriously, Indian ISPs should also try to innovate bit by bit and gradually work towards better user experience rather than planning ways to juice more money for substandard services they provide.

Major vulnerability in Skype password reset

1 comment:

A major vulnerability in Skype's password reset feature allowed any malicious user to hijack i.e. change account password of any other user just by knowing his/her email address. The issue is said to have existed for two months now and hackers also notified Skype of the problem. After waiting for long enough, they decided to post the vulnerability online after which the exploit went viral appearing on several blogs where authors explained how one can hijack other's accounts. Authors also recommended Skype users to change their primary email address to something less public in order to minimize the risk.

Right now Skype has temporarily disabled password reset page. A permanent fix is expected soon, waiting for official words on this critical issue.

Update: Folks at Skype have tweeted and put up a blog post addressing the issue, apologizing for the trouble and also assured that necessary fix has been implemented and that users need not worry.

Some common misconceptions about HTML5

No comments:
HTML5 is still new and there are many false assumptions, misconceptions or lets say myths that question it's ability, usefulness and sustainability. You'd often stumble across arguments against HTML5 over the Internet.

Some examples of common misconceptions:
  • Offers poor performance
  • Can not be used offline
  • Can not be monetized
  • Lacks standard development tools
Such arguments pop up because of poor understanding of core concepts of HTML5. HTML5 is still evolving. It was developed to enable people to do more inside web browsers without having to resort to native apps or plugins like Flash. It's is extremely powerful and can performs well, works wonderfully even in the offline mode (by making use of the web storage API which is supported by all major browsers) and can be easily monetized (via inline/interactive ads/surveys or sold in marketplace).

Check out this blog article by Chris where he does some HTML5 myth busting.
