If you aren't a gmail user and want to switch to gmail but fear loosing all your contacts and messages and that you would have to start afresh, then you need not worry.

The "Switch to Gmail" feature makes your switch easy and smooth. All your contacts and messages from previous mail account are transfered to your new gmail account provided that your previous email host is supported.
