Google drive to come out next week

1 comment:
Google drive
Google drive, Google's own cloud storage solution, is expected to come out next week. Users will be offered 5GB free online space when they sign up which is more than double of what Dropbox offers to it's free users. One could also pay a certain amount to extend this quota, plans are unknown at the moment.
Google drive will be released for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS and is expected to support "desktop folders". It is already seen as a massive challenger of Dropbox. While Dropbox has been around for sometime and has gained popularity, Google has it's own advantages. Google knows how to advertise new products, promote them among it's existing userbase and integrate them into already existing services.
Are you a dropbox user who will happily migrate to Google drive? I will as I'm very excited to check it out and wouldn't mind the free 5GBs. Also I've been loyal to Google for as long as I can remember.

Pirate Bay founder to be imprisoned

No comments:
November 2010, the Swedish Court of Appeal found three people behind The Pirate Bay guilty of criminal copyright infringement offenses.  Today the final judgement has come.
Peter Sunde, also known as Brokep, now awaits 8 months in prison. Fredrik Neij, also known as TiAMO, faces 10 months. Businessman Carl Lundström has the lightest sentence of 4 months. All will have to pay their share of a combined 46 million kronor ($6.8 million) in damages.
The government forgot that it's the same TBP that has been fighting for freedom of speech, fighting against censorship and has been serving every country equally. The founders and millions of TBP users are disappointed with count's judgement.

R.I.P. FileSonic - file sharing functionality disabled

3 comments:
After Megaupload.com was officially shutdown and a few people involved in the running of Megaupload.com were arrested, FileSonic.com, an another popular Filesharing website, has backed off from the fight by disabling all file Sharing functionality. If you visit the website's homepage , you'll be greeted with this message:
All sharing functionality on FileSonic is now disabled. Our service can only be used to upload and retrieve files that you have uploaded personally.

Upload and download files that you've personally uploaded ? Really ? We have Dropbox for that.
Filesonic has disabled it's primary feature i.e. "File sharing", rendering itself pretty much useless to the masses. It's clear that owners at FileSonic are scared of what happened to Megaupload.

Megaupload officially shutdown in US

No comments:
Megaupload.com shutdown

Megaupload.com, one of the largest file sharing website, was official shutdown in US on Thursday and the company was accused of facilitating illegal downloads of music, films and other contents. Prosecutors have
accused the company to own more than $500 million to copyright holders for providing downloads and hosting pirated content on their servers. Reports say that two co-founders of Megaupload have been already arrested.
This happened right after Wikipedia, Craigslist and Reddit.com were blacked out to protest SOPA and PIPA. I think the shutdown is a reply to protestors that US government holds the ultimate power.

Reliance bans filesharing sites, prevents Don2 downloads

19 comments:
Reliance entertainment, the firm responsible for destribution of SRK's lastest movie Don2 and one of the leading Internet service providers of India, has once again blocked access to filesharing sites. They had done the same during release of other bollywood movies like Singham and Bodygaurd.
These websites are confirmed to be blocked:
rapidshare, mediafire and filesonic.
This is what shows up when someone, connected through Reliance, tries to access filesonic.com: http://i.imgur.com/4Aw50.jpg
Being an ISP, they should understand that filesharing sites are not only used to download pirated movies. They are of great importance to students, officials and anyone else who wants to share files. Reliance seems to care only about it's own profit.

Facebook to show ads in news feed

4 comments:
Facebook users will now see an advertisement on their news feed everyday. Only most relevant ads will be displayed based on what brands/pages you and your friends like or are connected to.
Have you wondered why Facebook is free and always will be ? These ads are a major source of it's income so people should support them provided that ads don't become too loud.
If implemented properly, ads could turn in enough money because facebook has a huge userbase of 800 million people around the globe.

Try searching for "Let it snow" on Google

14 comments:
Google has again amazed searchers with a hidden Javascript animation that creates a wonderful snowfall effect on screen when someone searches for this particular phrase "Let it snow" but you must have a modern browser to experience this.
Snow flakes start falling gently, once the screen gets covered entirely with snow, a defrost button appears which can be clicked on to clear the screen or you can simply click and drag mouse pointer to clear specific areas on screen.
Perhaps Google keeps coming up with these Google hidden fun because they spread out pretty fast on social networking sites like twitter.

Bolt browser finally dies

2 comments:
Bolt browser in action

Bolt browser, a proxy based browser for java phones, has finally decided to discontinue it's free mobile web service. If you've not used bolt browser before, watch this cnet review. With bolt users could enjoy full PC-style browsing and stream videos even on phones with very limited resources. I had installed and used bolt on my N-series phone and I can say that it was a very smooth experience, I liked watching youtube videos in particular.
Unfortunately the browser didn't get too famous because of leading competitors like Opera mini and now it's going to discontinue. I saw this coming though.
The official website has put on this message on homepage.
The free BOLT mobile browsing service will be discontinued. Unfortunately, the economic circumstances prevent us from running a free service going forward. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your loyalty and support.
So have you used bolt browser earlier ? How was your experience ?

Congress website was hacked yesterday

14 comments:
Official website of Indian National Congress, the ruling party in India, was once again attacked by a group of Pakistani hackers on Friday morning. The site was probably hacked on Friday because it was Party leader Sonia Gandhi's 65th Birthday.

The contents of website were removed and Sonia Gandhi's profile was defaced with pornographic messages and a Pakistani email ID.
Soon enough, the website was taken down and proper measures were taken to bring the site back to normal.

It is not the first time when an important Indian website is hacked by Pakistani hackers, there have been several similar incidencein past. The question that arises here is, what is Indian cyber crime department doing to prevent future attacks and punish the attackers ? Is congress too busy in filtering our facebook updates ?

Indian government asks major internet firms to censor content

No comments:

Indian Government, after feeling offended by some content on Facebook, Google and other similar platforms, has asked these internet companies to monitor any user generated content before publishing them.
The New York Times reported that Telecom & IT Minister Kapil Sibal had called legal representatives from the various Internet service providers and Facebook to his office about six weeks ago. He had showed them a Facebook page that allegedly maligned Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
"This is unacceptable," he had told the representatives, one executive who had attended the meeting said.
The minister had asked them to find a way to monitor what is posted on their sites.
Sibal had asked them to employ humans to censor content, not technology, one executive said.

Is Indian Government unaware of the massive amounts of user generated contents that these sites publish every second or is it an attempt to tackle the growing problem of employment ?  ( sarcasm )

TRAI puts restriction on number of outgoing SMSes

No comments:
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has implemented a new restriction on maximum number of outgoing SMSes, in an effort to reduce mass spam SMSes being everyday by various firms and institutions in India. The maximum number of outgoing SMSes is now limited to 100 per day for prepaid users and 3000 per month for postpaid users. So far it sounds good but it's not. The problem is in the way they have implemented this restriction, this new rule is applicable not only to mass spam senders but also applicable to each and every single phone user in India. Many of us have huge friend circle and we can easily cross this limit of 100 SMSes in a day. With this new restriction in place we will have to switch to alternative texting solutions like blackberry's BBM. What do you think, should this restriction be removed ?

Twitter implements promoted tweets

No comments:
Twitter had been planning this for sometime and they've finally implemented it. Promoted tweets are sponsored tweets or basically advertisements that automatically appear in user timeline just like regular tweets. They will appear only if you follow the account that has paid for it. Also, promoted tweets are easily distinguishable from regular tweets because they are clearly indicated as promoted using an orange arrow like icon.

Google plus crosses phenomenal 20 million users

No comments:

Google plus, the new social networking site by google, has been growing tremendously. The website was launched less than a month ago and suprisingly enough, it's userbase has crossed a phenomenal figure of 20 million and the website is not even open to all. ( As you may already know, to get into google plus people need to get invited by another plus users. )

The stats were calculated by ComScore, leading statical data providing firm. With such a growth rate, Google plus is certainly appearing as a threat to facebook and twitter as both of them had gained 10 million userbase in over two years. It still has a long way to go, lets hope that google plus keeps rolling new and unique features, it already has it's back supported by the search giant.
