Facebook silently forces all users over to @facebook.com email addresses

1 comment:
Although Facebook had started offering email services to it's users since November 2010, on Friday, all users were silently forced over to @facebook.com email address which now shows up on timeline in place of original email address. According to Facebook, the change was brought to make contract information of all users consistent throughout the website.
While you may be happy with your brand new email address, many are not. How can a social networking website decide which email address I want to be known by?

Imagine all your personal email messages going through Facebook and showing up in Facebook inbox. Yes, that's how Facebook email address works.  All email messages sent to a user's Facebook address are displayed in their message inbox.
There are other reasons why you'd want to get rid of the Facebook email address quietly assigned to your and displayed on your timeline. Email address becomes part of one's identity on the internet over a long time so if you have Facebook friends from personal and professional circle(duh? everybody does), you'd certainly want to stick to a better email providers like Hotmail or Google mail instead of letting "those people" reach you via a Facebook address.
Users can still revert back to original email address by editing account settings. Just go to account settings and edit your contact information to hide the Facebook email address and optionally display your original one.

The Pirate Bay and other websites unblocked in India

No comments:
Indian users can once again access The Pirate Bay and other websites which were earlier blocked.

A high court order, passed earlier, allowed Internet service providers to block a website entirely just to prevent  broadcasting or downloading of a single movie.

As a result legitimate websites like The Pirate Bay and Vimeo were blocked for more that a month by ISPs like Airtel and Reliance.

Online protests, growing criticism and Anonymous Indian movement has lead to revision of court orders.
The new court order asks ISPs to block only specific website URLs which contain pirated content instead of blocking whole website.

"The order of interim injunction dated 25/04/2012 is hereby clarified that the interim injunction is granted only in respect of a particular URL where the infringing movie is kept and not in respect of the entire website," reads the updated decision.

Facebook forced to let users opt out of their names from being used in sponsored stories

No comments:
Earlier, users who liked a brand page or had something interesting to say about them could possibly become part of what Facebook calls "Sponsored Stories".

Sponsored stories basically highlight user's experience with a brand to promote it further. Facebook uses a person's name and face while crafting such sponsored stories and that's where problem arises. Till now a user had no control over whether his/her identity could be used to create such adverts.

While some users who became part of sponsored stories enjoyed the spotlight, others were annoyed and some even embarrassed. Last year, five angry members of the social networking site had filed a legal case against the tech giant after their faces were used in sponsored stories and they couldn't do anything about it.

The case has come a settlement where Facebook agrees to allow users the chance to opt out of their profiles being used in these adverts for at least the next two years.

The settlement rules: “Facebook will create an easily accessible mechanism that enables users to view the subset of their interactions and other content that have been displayed in Sponsored Stories. Facebook will further engineer settings to enable users, upon viewing the interactions and other content that have been used in Sponsored Stories, to control which of these interactions and other content are edible to appear in additional Sponsored Stories.”
