twitter will kill twitterdeck in future

No comments:
Twitter has finally announced that it has bought TweetDeck. The worst kept secret was confirmed by Twitter, through a blog post. TweetDeck has been sold off for about $40 million. Twitter some time in the future will kill off TweetDeck. It did not buy TweetDeck to create more apps or better ones. It bought TweetDeck, so UberMedia could not. The move was defensive and meant to make sure that UberMedia would not be able to control a large part of Twitter. TweetDeck addicts might find solace that their favourite 3rd party desktop app for Twitter
is no longer third-party and might also end up becoming the official Twitter client for the PCs. TweetDeck brings
no real value for
Twitter! TweetDeck is a great app for the desktop.Even its Chrome browser app is great. I use it everyday to manage my Twitter account. TweetDeck also has a nifty apps for iPhone, iPads, Android Phones and Mac desktops. Twitter itself has official apps for mobile phones and Apple Macs. So the real question is why will Twitter keep funding two different types of apps for the same platform? Chances are that over the year or two (if TweetDeck fans are lucky), Twitter will kill off the various TweetDeck applications or integrate them.
It might keep the Desktop version for PCs as an official client. Hopefully, Twitter finds a way to keep TweetDeck alive and thriving but logic tells me that this will be beginning of the end for TweetDeck. Do you use TweetDeck and what are your views on it being bought by Twitter? Do drop in your comments.

Sony Ericsson has officially launched two Android handsets, Xperia Arc and Xperia Play, in India.

Xperia Play, which is a combination of an Android 2.4 Gingerbread based Xperia phone and Sony's handheld gaming device 'PlayStation', will be available for around Rs 35,000.

Windows 7 is now the most used OS in USA

No comments:
Many of us have used almost each and every variant of Microsoft Windows including MS DOS, Windows 95 and Windows 98. However, two of the standout operating systems from Microsoft have been Windows XP and Windows 7. Windows Vista was an ok OS too, but it did have a lot of problems.

Windows XP was launched in August 2001, however, it still commands a huge market share in the PC market. Windows 7 though has been the fastest selling OS in history with it selling over 150 million copies in a very short time.

Ironically, Windows 7 did not compete with Windows Vista for market share, but did it with a 10 year old OS in the form of Windows XP. The reason being that many corporates are not yet ready to switch from Windows XP. I still find that many offices continue to use Windows XP as their primary operating system.

Microsoft though will be happy with the news that Windows 7 has finally managed to take over Windows XP as the top Windows operating system in United States. This data was generated through reports from StatCounter by Royal Pingdom for visitors to over 3 million websites.

Windows 7 now has a marginal advantage over Windows XP in U.S. This is bound to grow in future with more users buying new laptops and desktop PCs and dumping their older ones. Also, most of the newer Windows based tablets run some variants of Windows 7, so that might add to this number in future.

Overall, Windows XP has definitely been one of the best operating system from Microsoft. The fact that it still holds more than 31% of the market share after 10 years says a lot about it.

Microsoft has been mulling to remove support for Windows XP for a long time now, but they still continue to support it. However, Microsoft has been culling off major software support for the OS by not adding XP support for Windows Live Wave 4* and Internet Explorer 9. However, Windows XP still continues to dominate the operating system wars. Unlike IE6, this baby is a long way from becoming extinct.

If you are using Windows 7 or just bought a new PC with it installed, make sure to read out Ultimate List of Tips and Tricks for Windows 7 or the 3 Most Useful Windows 7 Tips.

Get the best of your Google Chrome

25 comments:

Chrome King 9 Tips to Get The Most Out Of Your Google ChromeEven though Google Chrome is not the most used browser (Firefox snatches the 1st place), it will defeat Firefox in the near future.

To be frank, Firefox 4 almost copied the interface of Google chrome! The only feature Chrome lacks (when compared to Firefox 4) is Panorama and toolbar support.

First to get most out of Chrome you need to switch to Developer channel or at least to the beta channel (I’m using Developer channel, so some of the tips I mention here may not available in your channel).

There are many interesting things to do in Chrome.

Here are 9 tips to get the most out of your Chrome browser.

#1. Make Your Own Custom Themes

You can find many good looking themes at Chrome Webstore but if you are thinking of something crazy like creating own Google chrome themes, then head on to Chrometheme.net or Chrome Theme Maker or Chromizer.

Read More about Chrome Theme Maker.

#2. Chrome Instant

Chrome Instant fastens searching and browsing. For this, the Omnibox (Chrome Address bar) will be logged. With Instant enabled, most pages begin loading as soon as you type a URL in the Omnibox, before you press Enter.

Just look up the wrench icon at top left and then click on Options. Under  Options you will can select “Enable Instant for faster searching and browsing” as you can see in the image below.

#3. AutoFill

With AutoFill you can enter your credentials like name, address, age etc in web forms with a single click. You can also save Credit card details so the next time you shop online, you don’t need to re-enter them.

For security purpose you can only see the last four digits of the credit card number. You can enter your AutoFill information on the Options page. icon smile 9 Tips to Get The Most Out Of Your Google Chrome

#4. Google Cloud Print

Google cloud print allows you access and share printers online. Using Google Cloud print you can make your printers available to your from any Google Cloud Print enabled web or mobile app.

To enable Google Cloud Print, sign in to your Google account on the options page and you’re done! Now you can send print jobs from your mobile to your windows computer.

Read More about Google Cloud Print.

#5. Manually Importing and Exporting Bookmarks

Xmarks has made exporting and importing bookmarks easy but you can also do it manually. Just head on to Bookmarks Manager (in your chrome browser), Open “Organize” menu and hit “Import bookmarks”. If you want to export bookmarks, then hit “Export bookmarks” in the same menu.

Remember that Chrome supports only HTML files (which contains bookmarks) to import bookmarks.

#6. Purge Memory

Chrome consumes lots of memory (than other browsers) which eventually slows down a PC, but if you’re on the developer channel then you can make use of purge memory button to decrease the memory usage of Chrome.  By default “Purge memory” doesn’t appear in chrome but you can make it appear by adding the ”–purge-memory-button”

(Check this YouTube tutorial on how to add command line switches to Chrome) command line switch, and you’ll be able to free up unused memory via button on the chrome task manager.  Check out the image below, I freed up about 22,000K memory in less than a second!

#7. Create Application shortcuts

You can create application shortcuts to websites that you regularly visit, as well as apps that you have installed from the Chrome Web Store.

These shortcuts can be placed on your computer desktop, quick launch toolbar and start menu for quick and easy access. Application shortcuts don’t have any other attachments like new tab page, address bar, wrench icon etc.

To create an application shortcut for a webpage, go to the webpage and click wrench icon > Tools > Create application shortcut.

#8. Useful Shortcuts

Another great way to use Chrome efficiently is to use all the useful shortcuts.

  • Ctrl + Esc ® Task Manager

  • Ctrl + Shift + B ® Hides Bookmarks bar

  • Ctrl + Shift + N ® Incognito window (Private browsing)

  • Ctrl + N ® New Window

  • Ctrl + T ® New Tab

  • Ctrl + U ® View source of current webpage

  • Ctrl + F ® Opens the find bar

  • Ctrl + J ® Downloads

  • Ctrl + Shift + D ® Saves all open pages as bookmarks

Those are some of my favorites; you can check Mac and Linux shortcuts here

#9. Chrome Channel changer

Chrome Channel changer makes it easy to switch between Google chrome channels (Stable, Beta and Dev). These channels only differ in frequency of updates. Personally, I prefer to go with Beta channel. You can download the app here.

So are these tips useful for you? Do share your tips and experiences with Chrome!

Google Reader Play

No comments:
Google Reader Play is a fast, fun way to browse interesting stuff on the web. No more looking for blogs, feeds, or sites - we'll bring the best of the best directly to you via Reader Play. When you use Reader Play, we'll keep track of the items you star, like, or share and show you similar items the next time you visit.
Reader Play uses the same technology as the Recommended Items feed in Reader to identify and aggregate the most interesting stuff on the internet. If you sign-in, Reader Play will be personalized with other items, like stuff that people you’re following have shared in Google Reader, and items similar to things you’ve previously liked, starred, or shared.
Using Reader Play
To begin, visit http://www.google.com/reader/play and click "Get Started." Access more items by clicking the arrow on the right, or simply use the right and left arrow keys to browse. You can also click on any item in the thumbnail preview below to jump straight to that item.

A few things about Reader Play:

* Click the item's title or the associated image to view the original site content.
* Click the "read more" link to view the full feed content for that item, or click the eye icon in the bottom left to switch to always showing the full feed content.
* Tired of manually navigating Reader Play? Click the TV icon to start a slideshow of items -- simply sit back and enjoy.
* Hide the thumbnails at the bottom by clicking the thumbnail icon in the bottom left.
* To customize your experience even more, click the sliders icon and choose different categories that interest you (we'll start showing them immediately).

Reader Play and Google Reader

When signed in, your likes, stars and shares in Reader Play will transfer to your Reader account. If you've never used Reader, or you're not signed in to your account, you can still use Reader Play to browse interesting items. However, keep in mind that you won't be able to like, star, or share items unless you sign into Reader.

Remember, if you've hooked up your Reader account as a connected site in Google Buzz, anything you share from Reader Play will also automatically appear in Google Buzz.

Insight of Google's ad serving mechanism ( manage personalized ads )

No comments:

Google might have several online properties but the single most important one it has is obviously its search engine. Almost everyone types in keywords to search for stuff they need online. So how does Google make money? They simply show relevant text ads, which might interest you while searching. Once you click on their text ad, Google makes money. This sort of simple revenue model has created a multi-billion dollar industry.

How does Google knows which advertisement to show you?

That is quite simple, all it does is track your search patterns, thanks to your browser. This allows Google to show newer and more relevant ads to you. This of course increases the chances of people clicking on the ads which subsequently makes Google billions.

If you do not want personalization of ads on your browser, use Keep My Opt Outs Chrome extension, which does not allow collecting data from your browser.

Features of Keep my Opt Outs Extension :

* Many times we get prompted for Chrome permission warnings. The extension still does not allow tracking any of our records.
* This is done by now allowing cookies to be stored from websites. This conforms to web privacy standards.
* We can do this all by tweaking Chrome preferences for cookies or even checking http://www.google.com/ads/preferences for making sure we do not get personalized ads.

Are you someone who does not mind Google tracking your information for showing preferences? Do drop in your comments.

Missing Internet explorer ? It's reborn [ v9 ]

5 comments:

Internet Explorer 9 was released Monday of this week and has already racked up more than 2.35 million downloads in the first 24 hours. According to Microsoft the beta version was downloaded only 1 million times during the first day of its release.

At 27 downloads per second, it gets 98,000 downloads per hour since the initial release. Compared to some other browsers, IE 9 hasn’t been very impressive. For instance, Firefox 3.5 saw more than 1 million downloads in the first hour. And by the end of its first 24 hours, Firefox 3.0 had been downloaded 8 million times.

Now it isn’t just about the numbers but the usability of the application. With updated HTML5 integration and an improved UI, this version of Internet Explorer is comparable to Google Chrome and even Mozilla Firefox. Speed tests done online show that it is comparable with processing and usability of the app.

Between IE8 and IE9 there has been an amazing speed improvement. The main reason why I moved away from Internet Explorer is the speed of the application. To launch, I usually had to wait 15-30 seconds for it to load up and bring me to the home page. Loading pages on the application took ages and I finally gave up migrating over to Google Chrome which loads Web pages in an instant. After short use of IE9, Web pages are loading just as fast as they do in Firefox or Google Chrome.

I am thoroughly impressed with the way IE9 has made major improvements with the UI and speediness of the application. Overall, I might be persuaded to switch back to Internet Explorer if Google starts to lose its touch with Google Chrome.

By far, Google Chrome is the browser of choice if you want speed and usability. But to say that Internet Explorer is comparable with Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox is saying a lot.

Soon Internet Explorer 9 will face more competition from Firefox, which is set to release the final version of Firefox 4 on March 22.
